I have a bit of a concept/theory for Electra Heart overall, along with all the Archetypes & the videos and whatnot. It’s not completely thought through, nor is it complete in general, but there’s some of it.
This is my last time organizing them together because I do it so often.
What I think people don’t understand the most about Electra Heart is that it both is and isn’t just one woman. The Archetypes aren’t one woman being four different things in a linear structure (As in, first she does this and she’s the Primadonna, then she does this and turns into the Su-Barbie-A, and then—). The four characters/Archetypes exist together as four separate entities. However, they are fakes, and are just multiple personalities that interact with each other of Electra Heart, who has multiple personality disorder (Remember: This is my theory. Feel free to disagree with it).
I know some people might disagree, but this is how I see each song fitting in with Electra Heart & the Archetypes. I used lyrical cues along with hints/tags on her tumblr to organize them.
The State of Dreaming
Valley of the Dolls
How to Be a Heartbreaker
Power & Control
Lonely Hearts Club
Buy the Stars
The Teen Idle:
Fear and Loathing
Now, some of them seem a bit shaky. I have reasoning for all of them, though.
"Primadonna" & "The State of Dreaming" are obvious, and both tagged under "Primadonna" in Marina’s tumblr.. "Valley of the Dolls" & "Sex Yeah!" are in the Primadonna archetype because the former acts more star-ish, almost describing her attempt at gaining fame and her plan to put on different shows or characters (Which, technically, should put it under "All", but it also can identify with a celebrity trying out different looks & personas to garner a different audience) while the latter somewhat mocks the generic pop star who just sings about sex.
"Homewrecker", "How to Be a Heartbreaker" & "Power & Control" are obvious (And their videos are all tagged under "Homewrecker" on Marina’s tumblr); the only thing you could question is "Power & Control", but it shows that she’s a Homewrecker/Heartbreaker, and she’ll always call the shots and be in control because she can end the relationship at any time while the poor schmuck she’s with will still love her. "Lonely Hearts Club" is under the Homewrecker because the Homewrecker is missing something: Love. She’s always on the run, she never has time to really stop herself from breaking hearts, so she never actually gets to love or be loved by someone she’ll actually stay with (This is expanded upon later).
"Lies" was tagged under the "Su-Barbie-A" tag in Marina’s tumblr; it also describes her with a coward of a husband, possibly a cheater, which fits perfectly for a suburban housewife living a mundane life (See the next song I’ll list) who has no control over her life and has a husband that dominates the house. "Living Dead" descries her life being boring, a never-ending cycle of doing the same thing over and over as a housewife, making her a zombie. "Hypocrates" is almost a big "fuck you" to her husband (Mentioned in the reasoning for "Lies"), pointing out his hypocritical, overly-analyzing ass that she’s tired of being judged and abused by. "Buy the Stars" is more obvious; she’s tired of him berating her and such in a way she described in "Hypocrates", and she doesn’t want to be seen as a piece of property anymore.
"Teen Idle" is obvious as the track for this archetype. "Bubblegum Bitch" was tagged as the Teen Idle archetype on her tumblr; however, the reasoning for this, I assume, is that the Teen Idle tries to put on a tough face at first and be seen as more badass or a wannabe-Heartbreaker so she doesn’t get called out on her insecurity issues. "Radioactive" shows that she’s capable in loving, and wants to be in love and in a relationship with a man (That the Primadonna may or may not steal away from her; that’s also a part in a book/film script I’m writing based on the Archetypes; see the next song for more on this). "Starring Role" shows that she lost the man, but still desperately wants to be with him, but then feels more angry at herself and thinks she’ll be better alone if she can’t be with him when she knows she belongs with him; in my mind, the Primadonna took everything + the man from the Teen Idle, creating a rivalry between them.
With the last two, “Electra Heart” is almost an introduction song, yet a perfect closing at the same time. It tells us to “go back to the start” before all of her problems and issues began with the Archetypes, back to at time when she was pure and didn’t have to deal with these kind of problems, or at least, when they were first beginning. It also mentions praying for forgiveness: She feels guilty for any sins she’s committed as the Archetypes and wants to be forgiven for them. It also mentions a “sickness”, which can be seen as multiple personality disorder: None of the Archetypes are real, they are just split personalities of Electra Heart, and are four separate characters rather than four parts in a linear story of one woman, even if they are all in her head. Now, “Fear and Loathing” is where things both began and ended, similar to “Electra Heart” and is why they’re both in the “All” category instead of being in any of the specific Archetypes. She’s developing the characters, or already has, and thinks about if any one of them will be loved or liked specifically, or if one will be hated. She fears having one personality, and figures that if she has multiple ones then she can avoid being hated since there will always be a backup that (hopefully) someone can like.
Anyway, I noticed something for all of the Archetypes: They’re all missing something in their lives:
The Primadonna: Sex - She’s so obsessed & busy with fame she hasn’t had time to please herself, physically
The Homewrecker: Love - She’s only broken hearts, but never found someone to complete hers
The Teen Idle: Popularity / Large recognition - She wants to be like the Primadonna, large & famous
The Su-Barbie-A: Sole recognition - Different than above; she wants to be seen as a true person rather than some disposable, zombie-like thing
This forms their characters, and gives them motives as separate people. They all want these things for themselves, and it may cause issues with each other (In my mind, the Primadonna & Teen Idle are rivals, while the Homewrecker & Su-Barbie-A are also enemies). Going out more on that last statement, I can see a rivalry between the Primadonna and the Teen Idle in the songs “Radioactive”, “Starring Role” & “Sex Yeah!”; the Primadonna takes the Teen Idle’s man & overshadows her, leaving the Teen Idle alone & angry. Same story for the other two; the Homewrecker is always causing romantic issues, and she has an affair with the Su-Barbie-A’s (possibly abusive, mentally or physically) husband, and the Su-Barbie-A is angry that her husband would do such a thing to her, furthering his abuse to her.
In the end, if you want to see it as a story (But not one directly linear one, since they are four separate entities rather than the different masquerades of one woman; though, they are projections of different sides of Electra Heart), it would end with:
The Teen Idle committing suicide.
The Primadonna having the Teen Idle’s man.
The Homewrecker leaving the Su-Barbie-A’s man on his ass so she’ll always be on the run.
The Su-Barbie-A slamming a door in her husband’s face when he comes back, being satisfied with herself and having a life of her own now.
However, that’s a false ending. The real ending is the discovery that none of the Archetypes are real, and that they are just different personalities of Electra Heart, who has split-personality disorder.
I can’t analyze all the videos specifically right now, but this is just my idea on the Archetypes/Electra Heart in general right now. Feel free to comment or disagree or whatever.
